Women on the Water and in the Woods

There was a time when one would be hard pressed to find a woman who was willing to go fishing, hiking, backpacking, or hunting, much less one who actually wanted to participate in these activities. However, theses days it’s not uncommon at all to find a woman in the field, in a tree stand, on the water, or hiking the Appalachian Trail for that matter.

Even today not all women are interested or willing to attempt one of these sports or outdoor activities. More often than not, it will depend on the woman and/or the activity. You’ll find, for instance, that some women will attempt anything at least once, while others will only have an interest in certain types of outdoor sports or activities. You may find one woman that will enjoy stream fishing but doesn’t care a bit about fishing from a boat. Likewise, you may find other women that prefer dove hunting over deer hunting and really care nothing about fishing.

Over the years men have used hunting, fishing, hiking, and other types of outdoor recreation as a means of escape and therapy. Women need escape and therapy as well. Don’t get me wrong; I still enjoy going to the lake or the field by myself or with my buddy from time to time. However, I consider myself very lucky because it turns out my woman has come to love boating and fishing just as much as I do. I don’t get out in the dove fields much any more, and I never got into deer hunting. My favorite therapy is fishing. When my lady and I go fishing, we both leave all of our troubles and worries at the boat ramp. It takes little effort to relax and enjoy the outdoors, the tranquility, and the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer. We have both come to realize that this time is very therapeutic for the sole, and we find it equally therapeutic for our relationship. It’s hard to explain how such time can remove you from the every day frustrations and distractions of life in general. For the two of us we find it very peaceful and refreshing. It also helps us appreciate this world we live in and the things we often take for granted.

If you haven’t already done so, try introducing the woman in your life to the outdoors. Invite your lady to that next fishing trip or hunting excursion. If she shows no interest, talk to her about it, and find an outdoor niche you both might enjoy. My woman enjoyed riding in the boat with me but initially could care less about fishing. When she was finally ready to let me show her how to fish, she was hooked. Spending time outdoors really is special, and it’s a wonderful way to spend quality time together.
